The idea behind the “Big Life Series,” described by the conference as an immersive education experience going to the heart of the civil rights movement, came from commissioner Kevin Warren to help better prepare their student-athletes to impact society in the wake of the George Floyd murder and the subsequent protests. “This is Selma, man,” Tucker said Monday as he began to unpack some of his feelings from what he described as a life-changing experience. And yet, this man’s words still caught him off guard because Tucker felt the “gravity to it.” Tucker has never shied away when asked if he feels a certain amount of responsibility that goes along with being one of the few Black head football coaches: “Hell, yeah, I feel it,” he often replies. “Coach Tucker! There’s my coach!” The man, he told Tucker, wasn’t a Spartan, but he’d been following what Tucker has been doing and was proud of him and happy that Tucker was in Selma. ![]() Tucker was visiting Selma as part of the Big Ten’s “Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery,” when the man, about Tucker’s age, called out to him while he was standing in the doorway of a business. But last weekend in Selma, Ala., a man approached him and left the 50-year-old Michigan State coach speechless. Mel Tucker has become used to being noticed and having fans want to take pictures with him.
